Lighthouse Summer Camp

Several children work intently as a group to figure out how to erect a complex wood project.

The Lighthouse offers a unique 6-week summer camp to provide an outlet for fun and creative play.   All blind or visually impaired youth between the ages of 6 and 22 are welcome to join.  Camp activities include:

  • Swimming
  • Arts and crafts
  • Cooking
  • Technology training
  • Fun with music
  • Yoga

Teens also participate in creative learning modules to enrich their social and academic skills.  Activities focus on developing important life skills, career exploration, guest mentoring, and discovery tasks to build character and prepare them for their future as young

An Instructor reviews safety techniques for using the oven as an eager child carefully removes hot cookies from the over. A child practices her mobility skills suing her white cane with help from and instructor. Two children wearing headphones listen to the computer as they develop their Internet skills using screen reader and screen magnification software.

 

Daily Living Skills Training

Building confidence is the key to success. Developing skills to enhance mobility, computer use, and cooking are just a few of the daily living skills we highlight to promote independence.

A group of campers enjoy a rousing game of BINGO with large print and Braille cards. An instructor teaches a couple of enthusiastic campers how to create music with the piano, guitar, and bongo drums. A group of energetic kids boogie down during a dance session.

 

Indoor Fun

There's plenty of laughter and fun with friends at The Lighthouse Camp. Games, music, and dancing are just a few of the indoor activities that our campers enjoy.

Outdoor Fun

Lighthouse campers go wild in the outdoors with trips to City Park, Audubon Stables, and Lake Pontchartrain for unforgettable fun in the sun with paddle boats, amusement rides, horseback riding, and even sailing.
