Home Training

A Lighthouse instructor teaches a beautiful elderly woman how to safely use a double spatula at the stove.

Upon completion of the Daily Living Skills Program, each client is offered a visit by a licensed Occupational Therapist who will provide the following services:

  • Home Safety & Lighting Assessment
  • Tactual Indicator Applications & Use
  • Adaptive Device Recommendations
  • Family & Caregiver Education Skills Review and Follow-up Training

Home Visits offer an opportunity for specialized training and are a good alternative for individuals who are not appropriate for learning in a group setting.  Visits are provided in St. Tammany Parish, St. John Parish, St. Charles Parish, St. Bernard Parish, Plaquemines Parish, and throughout the Greater New Orleans area.

Can a blind person be independent to cook and clean?

Independence in the home requires 3 things:

        1. Motivation
        2. Adaptation
        3. Compensation

There are many techniques and assistive devices available to support independent living with vision loss, but the key to success is having the drive to change old habits.  Loss of vision does not mean loss of information.  It simply means that information must be obtained in different ways.  For example, you may not be able to see the buttons on your microwave, but you can learn to use it independently by applying tactual markers.  This will allow you to use your sense of touch to identify the correct spot to push without relying on your vision.

Obstacles to cooking, cleaning, reading mail, paying bills, matching clothes, pouring coffee, and other household tasks can be overcome. Vision impairment does not have to limit independence, because there is always more than one way to perform an activity. You just need the motivation to learn new techniques, the training to master them, and resources to learn about the variety of devices that are available to help, if needed.
