Milan Golf Scramble To Benefit Lighthouse Louisiana

BY Temple Ruff
May 7th, 2013 - AskMissA.com

Imagine a beautiful May morning on the golf course, and add a dose of our special New Orleans flare… You will have none other than the Milan Golf Scramble. Taking place on Saturday, May 18, 2013, the fourth annual gathering will be held at the Audubon Park Gulf Course. Participants will have the opportunity to show off their club-swinging skills while enjoying the company and entertainment of local dance troupes, official “hecklers” and other special guests, all in support of the Uptown-based non-profit Lighthouse Louisiana.

The first Milan Golf Scramble was born out of the 2010 BP oil spill tragedy, as a small group of neighbors sought a way to unite the community, while benefiting the recovery effort. “Although we knew that whatever efforts we could put forth would be minor in respect to the national reaction to the problem, we wanted to contribute in some shape, form or fashion,” said Joey Powell, co-founder of the Milan Golf Scramble. Teaming with local community members and businesses, including Co-Founder Jeff Quirion of Entergy Partners Limited and Dave McCammon of the Mayan Import Company, the inaugural event was organized with proceeds going to the Audubon Nature Institute and its Sea Turtle Recovery Mission. Overcoming the challenges of a start-up charitable event, Joey heralds that “we felt that we had indeed become a ‘neighborhood that makes a difference!’”

Through this resolve and dedication to neighborhood well-being, the Milan Golf Scramble has continued to grow, becoming a mainstay of the New Orleans fundraising scene. Other organizations to benefit from its efforts include the Brees Dream Foundation and the New Orleans Firefighters Widows and Orphans Fund. This year’s beneficiary, Lighthouse Louisiana, is “dedicated to serving the blind and visually impaired” by providing quality products and services, as well as enabling opportunities for independence.

Continuing in their involvement, the always-fabulous Pussyfooters will oversee the “prize hole” contests, rewarding golfers with cool drinks, as well as impromptu dance performances. As a new addition, a trio of Organ Grinders, known for their “gypsy-phonic” grooves, will also be on hand with loads of their unique enthusiasm and style. Not to be outdone by the dance troupes, the “Official Hecklers” will be out in force and in costume. These “too be revealed” ladies will be manning the beverage carts and, as Joey states, “Their job is not only to sell the beverages donated to our event to raise money, but to give the golfers as hard a time as possible.” It’s all part of the fun that makes the Milan Golf Scramble special.

Raffle tickets will be available for $5 each or $20 for five. Prizes include, but are not limited to: golf clubs, overnight hotel stays and gift certificates to local restaurants and spas. In addition, GoGo Jewelry on Magazine Street has generously donated a designer cuff that will be auctioned off at the post-tournament awards party, which will be held at the Milan Lounge.
